What can people in the USA expect from Democrat Harris if she becomes US President? A TV interview should shed light on this.
In her first TV interview since her nomination, Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris announced that she would like to bring a Republican into her cabinet if she wins the election. “I still have 68 days until the election, so I don’t want to put the cart before the horse,” the 59-year-old said in the interview.
But she is convinced that it is important that people with different views and different experiences sit at the table when making the most important decisions, Harris said. “And I think it would be beneficial for the American public to have a member of my cabinet who is a Republican.”
Election campaign in the swing state
The entire interview with the US broadcaster CNN will be broadcast on Thursday evening (local time/German night to Friday 3:00 a.m. CEST). The broadcaster released individual excerpts from the conversation with CNN journalist Dana Bash in advance. Harris also said in one of the clips that her political values have not changed. The joint interview with Harris’ running mate Tim Walz was recorded in Savannah, Georgia. Harris is campaigning in the state.
Georgia is one of the so-called swing states, i.e. the states that are particularly important for the presidential election on November 5th. While most of the 50 states are firmly in the hands of the Republicans or Democrats, a few are hotly contested. Particularly close races are expected in Pennsylvania, Arizona, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Wisconsin and Georgia.
TV debate in September
The Republican candidate Trump has recently repeatedly criticized his opponent for not having given an interview in her new role. In fact, the new front woman of the Democrats in the election campaign has only appeared in the protected space of choreographed campaign appearances in recent weeks. In the coming weeks, Harris will have to prove herself in situations that are not entirely under the control of her campaign team. This includes a planned TV duel against Trump in Germany on the night of September 11th.
