Because of his move to the European Parliament, the authorities had to take a forced break in the investigations against AfD politician Petr Bystron. In order to end the investigation, they are now turning to Parliament.
In the course of the money laundering and bribery investigations against AfD politician Petr Bystron, the Munich Public Prosecutor’s Office has requested the European Parliament to lift his immunity. This was confirmed by a spokesman for the Public Prosecutor’s Office. The “Augsburger Allgemeine” newspaper had previously reported on this.
The parliamentarian is suspected of having received money in connection with the pro-Russian portal “Voice of Europe” in order to act in Russia’s interests in the Bundestag. Bystron himself has always denied the accusations against him and described the proceedings as politically motivated. The presumption of innocence applies until the proceedings have become legally binding.
The Bundestag lifted Bystron’s immunity in May. As a result, several searches were carried out. After Bystron moved to the European Parliament, the investigators had to take a forced break. With his new mandate as an MEP, Bystron, who ran in second place on the AfD’s list in the election, enjoys immunity again. Investigations can only continue if Bystron’s immunity is lifted by the European Parliament.
