Sometime in late summer, a decision will be made as to who will be the Union’s candidate for chancellor. There is a clear favorite – but for Bavaria’s science minister, the game is not yet over.
For Bavaria’s Science Minister Markus Blume, the question of the Union’s candidate for chancellor has not yet been decided. “Markus Söder is a personality who wins hearts throughout the country. That is an extremely significant asset. The CSU can be chancellor, that is completely beyond question. For me, the question is still open,” said Söder’s party colleague in an interview with the “Süddeutsche Zeitung”.
When asked whether the CDU/CSU would be best off with a candidate named Söder in next year’s federal election, Blume said: “That is not a question yet.” CDU leader Friedrich Merz had said that the Union would clarify its K question in late summer, which begins in September and ends “sometime in October.” He had made this agreement with Söder. The CDU chairman, who is also the opposition leader in the Bundestag, is considered – also from Söder’s point of view – the clear favorite.
From Blume’s point of view, both parties have “strong locomotives that are capable of pulling not only the Union together, but also Germany,” said Blume. When asked whether he could imagine becoming a federal minister, he replied: “My place is in Bavaria.”
