State elections in Thuringia and Saxony: Celebrities position themselves

Ahead of the state elections in Saxony and Thuringia, several celebrities are calling for people to vote. These include Herbert Grönemeyer and Clueso, who is afraid of what will become of his homeland.

In Saxony and Thuringia, state parliament elections will be held this Sunday. And some celebrities – some of them even come from eastern Germany – are using their large reach to call on their fans and followers to vote.

Clueso calls for voting in the state elections

Among them is musician Clueso, who was born in Erfurt. “We have put ourselves in a difficult situation in my home state of Thuringia. There is too much opposition, too little cooperation,” the singer writes on Instagram alongside a photo of himself. “We should sit together more, argue and respect each other in our differences. Our democratic state is an achievement in itself, worth fighting for, and it provides the basis for great cooperation,” writes Clueso.

He ends his post with a call to his fans. “Let’s come together again and not drift into extremes. I don’t want to wake up in a country where radicals rule. Please go and vote and have your say,” he writes.

Herbert Grönemeyer also spoke publicly. On Saturday evening he performed with the band Silbermond at their concert in Dresden. The rock band’s musicians come from Bautzen (Saxony) and often express their political views. Grönemeyer did the same with singer Stefanie Kloß. “What doesn’t help, we agree on this, is the spirit of 1933,” sang Grönemeyer alongside Kloß. 1933 was the year Adolf Hitler’s National Socialists seized power.

In 2019, Silbermond released a song called “Mein Osten” in which they addressed their feelings for their homeland. starIn an interview with the German magazine ‘Die Welt’, Stefanie Kloß said that it was tearing her apart to read negative headlines about her hometown of Bautzen.

Yvonne Catterfeld was also born in Thuringia, more precisely in Erfurt. She also uses Instagram to express her feelings. Her thoughts are with those “who are just as worried,” wrote the singer and actress: “Because of the election and the trend that will probably manifest itself in the numbers in the end,” said Catterfeld. “The AfD is not a solution and will not find a solution to the problems, but will divide our state even further and endanger our constitutional state and our democracy even further,” she wrote and asked her fans: “Have you read the party program carefully?” At the same time, Catterfeld fears that politics has “already lost” most voters in Thuringia and Saxony.
