The AfD wins the state election in Thuringia, but does not gain government power. Instead, the state is facing the most adventurous cabinet formation in the history of the Federal Republic.
It is 6:20 p.m. when the man who led a one-man government for several days walks up the street to the Thuringian state parliament. Even on the day of his defeat, Thomas Kemmerich is wearing his usual work uniform: blue suit, white shirt, black cowboy boots.
On this mild Sunday evening, the former Prime Minister has to go through the security gate, just like everyone else. Kemmerich’s FDP got just over one percent (in figures: 1.2 percent). His bet that he could somehow steal votes from the AfD and CDU as a renegade against the traffic light coalition did not pay off.
