The state executive committee of the Thuringian CDU has given the green light for talks with the Sahra Wagenknecht alliance and the SPD. But it could take a very, very long time.
The Thuringian CDU has cleared the way for initial talks with the Sahra Wagenknecht alliance and the SPD. Thuringia’s CDU general secretary Christian Herrgott said that the state executive committee had authorized him and CDU state party leader Mario Voigt to hold these talks. These are not yet coalition talks or exploratory talks. The decision of the state executive committee was unanimous.
No cooperation with the AfD
At the same time, Herrgott made it clear that the CDU’s incompatibility resolution still applies. “That is clear: we will not work with the AfD. We said that before the election and it will also apply after the election. The same applies to a coalition with the Left,” said Herrgott. He made it clear that they are at the beginning of a “long, long and intensive process.”
Previously, CDU federal chairman Friedrich Merz had also stressed that the incompatibility resolution was directed at the AfD and the Left Party and that it was up to the state associations in Saxony and Thuringia how to deal with it.
Thuringia: Stalemate after sitting
The CDU came second in the state elections – behind the AfD led by right-wing AfD politician Björn Höcke. However, the situation after the election is complicated. A coalition option between the CDU, BSW and SPD, which was often discussed beforehand, will not have a majority of seats in the new state parliament in Erfurt, it will only have 44 seats, and the possible opposition from the AfD and the Left will also have 44 seats – a stalemate.
The CDU’s state executive committee has already dealt with personnel issues: It unanimously decided that Voigt should run again for the chairmanship of the parliamentary group. The MP Andreas Bühl should therefore run for the post of parliamentary manager.
