Justice: Right-wing extremist riots: Nine years in prison for man in England

British courts are cracking down on the right-wing extremist riots. A judge has imposed the longest sentence to date on a 27-year-old who started a fire in front of a hotel housing asylum seekers.

A man has been sentenced to nine years in prison for starting a fire outside a hotel with asylum seekers during the right-wing extremist riots in England. The sentence is the longest prison sentence ever imposed for the riots, reported the British news agency PA. The 27-year-old was also filmed attacking police officers.

The case was undoubtedly one of the most serious he had dealt with in the wake of the attack, said the judge at Sheffield Crown Court, according to PA. A mob attacked a hotel in Manvers, northern England, on August 4.

The accused had put wood on a fire in a rubbish container that had been pushed towards the exit of the building, PA reported. In the hotel, 22 employees had barricaded themselves in a panic room and feared for their lives. More than 200 asylum seekers were also housed in the building in the Rotherham area.

More than 200 people convicted

A few weeks ago, right-wing extremist riots broke out in several British cities. So far, more than 200 people have been convicted. According to PA, courts imposed prison sentences in most cases.

Dozens of police officers were injured in the riots, vehicles were set on fire and shops were looted. This was preceded by a knife attack in the town of Southport in which three girls were killed and other people injured. The lie that the perpetrator was a Muslim migrant was spread on social networks.
