American aid to Ukraine will expire in the near future. Whether Kiev will receive new arms supplies depends on NATO partners, explains military expert Christian Mölling.
The unresolved question of how military aid for Ukraine will be financed when the US aid package of 60 billion dollars passed in May expires is causing increasing concern for the government in Kiev, according to military expert Christian Mölling. This is the main reason for the announced visit of the Ukrainian president to the meeting of Ukraine’s western allies today at the US military airport Ramstein in Rhineland-Palatinate.
Mölling said on Friday in star– : “It is clear that there will be no new aid packages from the USA in the foreseeable future. By the end of the year at the latest, the Europeans will be required to provide large aid packages again.” The director of the “Future of Europe” program at the Bertelsmann Foundation believes that the federal government’s plans for future arms deliveries are not viable. These envisage financing future aid to Ukraine with the help of the G7 rather than from the federal budget.
“I can understand that people in Kiev are getting nervous,” said Mölling. The one-on-one meeting planned in Ramstein between Zelensky and Chancellor Olaf Scholz should also be seen against this background. In Germany in particular, it must be clear that the investments made to date in favor of Ukraine would have been in vain if it were not possible to continue to provide consistent assistance to Kiev, said Mölling.

For a few days now, satellite images have been circulating in Western media of a newly constructed facility north of Moscow that can apparently be used to launch nuclear-powered cruise missiles. The expert believes that this facility is no reason for NATO to be particularly concerned.
“How can it be,” asks Mölling, “that a facility that is so secret is now suddenly made public? That is scaremongering.” These current reports show how Russian President Vladimir Putin is playing on our fears. It is questionable whether the Russian cruise missile of the type “Burevestnik”, which means “petrel” in English, will actually be able to overcome NATO air defenses better than previous Russian systems.
Selenskyj secures power in Ukraine
According to Mölling’s assessment, the radical reshuffle of his cabinet, which Zelensky announced this week, can be explained by the context of the current phase of war. “If you are a president at war, then you have to keep thinking about where your power base comes from.”
Zelenskyj is partly concerned with maintaining the democratic legitimacy of the government under the difficult conditions of martial law. On the other hand, the Ukrainian president probably also wants to keep potential competitors in check. “He remains the main center of gravity of power.” The internal Ukrainian debate about the right course in the war will continue even after the cabinet reshuffle.
