The Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution and several US authorities have warned of Russian cyber attacks in NATO countries. According to the statement, a group linked to the Russian military intelligence service GRU “attacked networks in NATO member states in Europe and North America as well as countries in Latin America and Central Asia.”

The “primary intent” of the attacks since early 2022 appears to be to “scout and disrupt aid to Ukraine,” the statement continued. Known targets include critical infrastructure, government agencies, and companies in the financial, transportation, energy, and health sectors.

Several US authorities co-authored the warning. The FBI, the National Security Agency and the CISA cybersecurity agency were named.

Cyberattacks by UNC2589

Specifically, the warning is aimed at a cyber group called UNC2589. According to the information, it is also known as UAC-0056, Cadet Blizzard or Ember Bear. According to US information, it is connected to the Russian military unit 29155 of the GRU. This is known for sabotage operations and assassinations, according to the statement from the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, which originally came out on Thursday.

Among other things, the GRU unit was responsible for the poison attack on double agent Sergei Skripal in England in 2018. Since 2020, the unit has also been “carrying out cyber attacks and is continuously expanding its capabilities in this regard.”
