Russia’s military reports further progress in eastern Ukraine. A dangerous situation is developing for Kiev on one front
The Russian military says it has captured four more towns in the eastern Ukrainian region of Donetsk. Army Group South has captured Krasnohorivka and Hryhorivka, Army Group East has captured Vodyane and Army Group Center has captured Halyzynivka, the Russian Defense Ministry said.
The information cannot be independently verified. Ukrainian military observers have marked three of the towns in question – all except Hryhorivka – as occupied.
Ukraine is under severe pressure on the front in the east of the country. The situation is most complicated in the area between the towns of Pokrovsk and Kurakhove. There, Russian troops have made significant gains in territory following the fall of the Ukrainian fortress of Avdiivka at the beginning of the year.
In an arc between Krasnohorivka and the town of Ukrainsk, west of the now captured town of Halyzynivka, there is currently a threat of Ukrainian troops being encircled or, after their retreat, losing further territory. Russian troops have already advanced towards the mining town of Hyrnik in this arc of the front.
