There has long been speculation as to whether Taylor Swift would comment on the US presidential election. Now she is doing just that – and outshining the TV debate between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump.
US superstar Taylor Swift supports Kamala Harris. Via Instagram post. Directly after the end of the TV debate. There had long been speculation about whether the currently biggest pop star in the world would make some kind of recommendation for the election. And whether, if so, she would give the Democratic presidential candidate her blessing. So now she is doing it.
Taylor Swift: “Kamala Harris is a gifted leader”
“I think she is a calm, gifted leader and believe we can accomplish so much more in this country when we are led by calm, not chaos,” Swift wrote on Instagram after watching the televised debate between Harris and Trump. She will vote for Harris and her running mate Tim Walz in the upcoming presidential election. She ended her post with: “a childless cat lady” – as an allusion to a derogatory remark by Trump’s running mate JD Vance.
Taylor Swift is a shining light in the USA. She produces one hit after another. She regularly breaks records at award ceremonies. Swift has enormous influence among her fans and has around 283 million followers on the Instagram platform. Swift recently came fifth on the Forbes list of the world’s most influential women. For Harris, support could be crucial in the close election campaign against Republican presidential candidate Trump.
More than half of all Americans are Swifties
Because she has a huge fan base: About 53 percent of adults in the US said in a survey published in 2023 that they were Swift fans. Swifties – that’s what her fans call themselves – are considered extremely loyal. Like the artist herself, most of her fans in the US come from suburbs or live in the countryside. About half are female and millennials, so like Swift they were born between 1981 and 1996. Around three quarters are white. She has influence on an important voting group.
For years, Swift carefully avoided taking a political stance. In 2018, however, she caused a stir when she opposed the ultra-radical candidate for the US Senate, Marsha Blackburn, in Tennessee. When Swift urged her fans to vote in September 2023, 35,000 new voter registrations were counted in no time. In 2020, Swift supported the eventual winner, Joe Biden.
