He had just arrived in New York when terrorists attacked the World Trade Center on September 9, 2001. Here Michael Streck talks about cold dust and the time when the world changed.
This article comes from the stern archive and first appeared on September 10, 2021, on the 20th anniversary of 9/11.
Exactly one week before the attacks on the World Trade Center, we were standing on the Empire State Building and looking at the World Trade Center. The sun was setting and my wife said to our daughters, who were seven and nine at the time: “Do you see the tall towers over there? From up there, on a nice day, you can see as far as Delaware. And we’ll see that next week.” The daughters didn’t really understand at the time. They didn’t know what to do with the tall towers, and certainly not with Delaware. We had only just arrived. There is still a photo of it. The children on the observation deck high above Manhattan, in the background the towers, which were no longer there seven days later.
