Political crisis: French Prime Minister promises government next week

Despite difficult negotiations, France’s new Prime Minister Michel Barnier wants to present a government next week. It is not yet known which parties will be involved.

Despite the difficulty of forming a government, France’s new Prime Minister Michel Barnier wants to present his cabinet next week. “Next week we will have a government,” Barnier said in Reims, as the newspaper “Le Parisien” reported.

“We will approach things methodically and seriously, I will receive the group leaders,” said Barnier on the status of the exploratory talks. These are complicated due to the balance of power in parliament.

When he took office on Thursday evening last week, the conservative Barnier announced a political realignment as well as “changes and breaks”. The 73-year-old has not yet said which policies the former EU Commissioner intends to implement with the support of which parties.

The left-wing alliance emerged as the winner of the early parliamentary elections almost two months ago, ahead of Macron’s centrist camp and Marine Le Pen’s right-wing nationalist Rassemblement National in third place. Since the left-wing alliance did not receive an absolute majority and the parties have not managed to form a governing coalition in recent weeks, the political situation in France is difficult. Last week, President Emmanuel Macron appointed former EU Commissioner Barnier as the new head of government.
