For over a month, Ukraine has been advancing into the Russian border region of Kursk. Now Russian troops are reclaiming the lost territory – apparently successfully.
According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Russia has launched a counter-offensive in the Russian border region of Kursk. This reaction by the Russian army “corresponds to the Ukrainian plan,” Zelensky said on Thursday at a press conference in Kyiv, without giving any further details. He also criticized the hesitation of Western states in lifting restrictions on the use of long-range weapons against targets in Russia.
The Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement that Russian units of the Northern Troops had “liberated ten villages in two days during offensive operations” in the Kursk region.
The Ukrainian army launched a military offensive in the Russian border region of Kursk on August 6. Since then, it says it has captured around a hundred Russian villages and almost 1,300 square kilometers. The advance was the first of its kind since the start of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine in February 2022.
