Friedrich Merz is calmly moving toward becoming the Union’s candidate for chancellor. Only one thing can still go wrong. People in the CDU are nervous.
Sometimes Friedrich Merz seems to be taking a calmness training course. Like recently in Kremmen, north of Berlin. The CDU leader has just given an election campaign speech. Law and order, a stable economy; if it had been up to the people in the country inn, he could have talked all night long.
Merz actually has to get to Berlin quickly now. But he takes his time, strolls outside, chats, shakes hands. “So,” he says to a small group of fans. “Where do we want to take photos now?”
His people are getting restless. The next appointment is urgent. The door of the company car is already open.
