Over the Baltic Sea: Air Force flies mission because of Russian aircraft

German Eurofighters flew a mission over the Baltic Sea together with aircraft from Latvia. The trigger was two aircraft without identification. They came from Russia.

A so-called alert squadron of the German Air Force took off from Laage near Rostock because Russian aircraft were again flying over the Baltic Sea on Friday without transponder identification or flight plan registration. As the Air Force announced after the incident, the intruders were a Tupolev-142 Bear submarine hunter and an accompanying SU-30 Flanker-H aircraft.

Unknown aircraft over the Baltic Sea

In addition to the German Eurofighter aircraft from Laage, aircraft from Lielvarde in Latvia were also involved in the defense operation. The main goal was to identify the initially unknown aircraft and accompany them on their flight. The so-called alert squadrons, which usually consist of two Eurofighter aircraft, can take off within a few minutes if necessary to identify threats and, if necessary, ward them off. Incidents of this kind are common over the Baltic Sea.
