There has been another assassination attempt on Donald Trump. The Secret Service and FBI are investigating and a suspect has been arrested.
Authorities have released further details following a suspected attempted assassination of the former US president. The Secret Service shot the suspect on Sunday afternoon (local time) at around 1:30 p.m. in West Palm Beach, Florida, said spokesman Rafael Barros. The armed man was on the property boundary of Trump’s golf club and then fled.
A Secret Service agent was previously able to see a gun barrel sticking out of the fence, said the sheriff in charge, Ric Bradshaw. The gunman was about 270 to 500 meters away from Trump, who was playing golf at his club. Bradshaw said it was unclear whether the man had also fired – or just the Secret Service, which is responsible for protecting high-ranking politicians in the USA. After the man fled, an AK-47 assault rifle with a telescopic sight and a Go-Pro camera were found in the bushes at the scene. This had been mounted on the fence, possibly to film a planned assassination attempt.
The sheriff also said that a witness saw a man running out of the bushes and took a photo of his vehicle. This led to the suspect’s arrest on a highway near the crime scene. “There is no longer any danger,” Sheriff Bradshaw said.
Donald Trump: “I’m safe, I’m fine”
The FBI said it was investigating an incident “that appears to have been an assassination attempt on former President Trump.”
Shortly after the incident, Trump himself commented on the incident: “Before the rumors get out of hand, I want you to hear this first: I am safe and I am fine!” he wrote in an email to his supporters. “Nothing will stop me. I will never give up!”
Biden and Harris informed and “relieved”
US President Joe Biden and his Vice President Kamala Harris have been informed about the “security incident” related to Donald Trump. Both are “relieved” to know that the Republican presidential candidate is safe, the White House said. “They are being regularly updated by their team,” it continued.
On July 13, a gunman shot at Trump from a nearby roof at a campaign event in the state of Pennsylvania, but narrowly escaped the assassination attempt. Trump was wounded in the right ear by a bullet, and the perpetrator was shot dead by security forces shortly afterwards. One visitor died and two others were injured.
