The drone war between Moscow and Kiev is expanding. Ukrainian drones are now also hitting targets deep in the Russian hinterland – now apparently an ammunition depot in northwest Russia.
According to official information, the small town of Toropets in the northwestern Russian region of Tver has been partially evacuated due to a major fire caused by drone fire. “For the safety of citizens, Governor Igor Rudenya has ordered a partial evacuation of the population from the territories where air defense is deployed and the fire is being fought,” the regional government’s press service said via Telegram.
The situation is said to be under control. While the official statement says falling drone debris caused the fire in the city, media reports say the drone attack was aimed at a nearby ammunition depot. The explosions triggered there are said to have led to the fire.
There are several videos of heavy explosions that are said to have come from the ammunition depot. Kiev has already claimed the impacts as a success. The head of the Ukrainian presidential office, Andriy Yermak, distributed one of the videos with the comment: “Russia’s demilitarization is necessary to end terror.” The Russian Defense Ministry did not provide any information on drones shot down over the Tver region.
The recordings cannot be independently verified. However, there are several military units near Toropets. There is said to have been a drone attack on one of the facilities in May.
Toropets is a small town with about 13,000 inhabitants, about 400 kilometers as the crow flies northwest of Moscow.
