After attempted attack: Trump: “Only consistent presidents are shot at”

It is the former president’s first appearance since the attempted attack on his golf course – and Trump is using the incident to promote his political plans.

In his first campaign appearance since the alleged assassination attempt on him, Republican US presidential candidate Donald Trump linked the incident to his political plans. After discussing his demand for 200 percent tariffs on cars imported from Mexico at the event in Flint (Michigan), he said on Tuesday (local time): “And then you wonder why I’m being shot at, right? Only consistent presidents get shot at.”

On Sunday, the Secret Service shot an armed man who was hiding in the bushes at Trump’s golf course in Florida while the former president was playing. The suspect did not fire a bullet and fled, but was arrested and charged shortly afterwards. Two months ago, Trump was attacked in Pennsylvania. He was slightly injured.

The Secret Service did a “damn good job,” Trump said in Michigan, but also called for more staff for the agency responsible for protecting high-ranking politicians. Regarding phone calls with US President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, he said both were “very nice”: “In a way, I wish the call hadn’t been made.” Trump had previously blamed Biden and Harris for the incident.

On November 5, Trump and Harris will face each other in the presidential election.
