Does he misunderstand the word “asylum”? Trump explains his Hannibal Lecter remark

Donald Trump explains why he speaks of the film character “Hannibal Lecter” from the thriller “The Silence of the Lambs” in the context of asylum. Critics have a different assumption.

In his speeches, Donald Trump uses the bizarre comparison of the migration problem with the horror classic “The Silence of the Lambs”. The Republican presidential candidate is apparently fascinated by the character of the cannibalistic serial killer Hannibal Lecter from the film – whom he mentions to illustrate the supposed danger posed by “bloodthirsty” immigrants.

At a campaign event in Flint, Michigan, he explained his “Hannibal Lecter” comments. Critics say Trump may have misunderstood the word “asylum.” In English, it can mean “asylum” or, in the sense of “mental asylum,” also an insane asylum. In the well-known film “The Silence of the Lambs,” Anthony Hopkins appears as Hannibal Lecter in a prison for mentally ill criminals.
