Following the explosions in Lebanon, Israel’s Defense Minister Joav Galant announced a “new phase” of the war. “The focus is shifting to the north,” Galant said, according to his office. Israel’s army and the Lebanese Hezbollah militia have been fighting there for months.
“We are providing forces, resources and energy for the northern area,” Galant reportedly said during a visit to an air force base. He recalled Israel’s recently set war goal: the return of refugee Israeli citizens to the border area. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also promised this again in a video address.

According to Chief of General Staff Herzi Halevi, the army is ready to do whatever is necessary to create the conditions for this. “We still have many capabilities that we have not yet used.”
“We are at the beginning of a new phase of the war – it requires courage, determination and perseverance on our part,” continued Defense Minister Galant. The army, together with the foreign intelligence service Mossad, had “performed an outstanding job,” he said, without giving any details.
Since the Gaza war began almost a year ago, there have been almost daily confrontations between Hezbollah and the Israeli military. Tens of thousands of people on both sides have had to flee their homes. Hezbollah, which is allied with Hamas, will not silence its weapons until a ceasefire is reached in the Gaza Strip.
According to official reports, at least nine people were killed and more than 300 others injured in further explosions involving electronic devices in Lebanon.
