The Ukrainian army needs more weapons than originally expected for its defensive fight against Russia. That is why Germany wants to release additional money.
The German government wants to provide an additional 400 million euros in the short term for military support for Ukraine. This is stated in a letter from the Ministry of Finance to the Bundestag’s Budget Committee, which the German Press Agency has seen. The money will be used to purchase military equipment for the Ukrainian army – particularly air defense, drones and protective equipment. State Secretary for Finance Florian Toncar (FDP), who signed the letter, warns of the danger “that Ukraine will be defeated in its defense struggle without significantly increased material support.”
According to the Federal Ministry of Finance, around 1.42 billion euros are still needed to support Ukraine by the end of the year. That is 397 million euros more than provided for in the budget, which is why the approval of the Bundestag is required. FDP MP Karsten Klein has already signaled support for the project. “We are keeping our word,” assured the member of the budget committee. “Ukraine urgently needs more military material and military equipment to defend its freedom and our values.”
