More people in Switzerland: Switzerland breaks the nine million mark in population

Switzerland’s population is growing rapidly. This is a thorn in the side of the right-wing SVP. They have a plan to stop it.

The population of Switzerland is growing. At the end of June, it exceeded the mark of nine million permanent residents for the first time. According to the Federal Statistical Office (FSO), 9,002,763 people lived in Switzerland at the end of June.

Around 27 percent of them have a foreign passport. After Italians, Germans are the second largest group with 323,600 (as of the end of 2023). In addition, there are around 65,000 Germans who work in Switzerland but do not live there.

Immigration is a thorn in the side of the right-wing SVP party. It has submitted a popular initiative entitled “No 10 million Switzerland!” It demands that the permanent resident population must not exceed ten million before 2050. Only twelve years passed between the eight million and nine million mark being exceeded.

When the population reaches 9.5 million, the SVP wants to drastically limit immigration and naturalization of foreigners. The initiative will be decided in a referendum. There is no date for this yet.
