Everyone is talking about Afghans and Syrians – nobody is talking about Turkish asylum seekers. But they make up the third largest group of applicants. Why that is a problem.
These days, German politics seems to have only one goal: tougher immigration policy. Only those who are allowed to stay should stay, procedures should be faster, and deportations should become more frequent. But there is a strange gap in the debate.
While Syrians, Afghans and people from Africa are being discussed intensively, one of the largest groups is hardly mentioned: asylum seekers from Turkey. 21,590 Turks have applied for asylum so far this year, about as many as from the whole of Africa. This puts the country in third place among countries of origin, with only Syrians (53,313) and Afghans (26,938) submitting more asylum applications.
