Ukrainian President Zelenskyj has landed in the USA – and hopes to receive support there for his so-called victory plan. He also wants to promote this on the sidelines of the UN summit.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky sees the autumn as a decisive phase for the further course and end of the war. “Together with our partners, we can strengthen our position as necessary for our common victory – for a truly just peace,” Zelensky said in his daily video address. According to him, a just result will be when Russia has to answer for the war of aggression and feels its consequences. This time Zelensky gave his speech on board an airplane. Shortly afterwards, the President’s press service published pictures of the airplane landing in the USA.
In his video address, Zelensky announced that he would present the so-called victory plan to US President Joe Biden, the two presidential candidates Kamala Harris and Donald Trump, and both parties in Congress. He said he would also present the plan, the details of which he had not yet announced, to other heads of state.
Appearance before the UN General Assembly
The reason for Zelensky’s trip is the UN Future Summit. Today, the Ukrainian president plans to speak at the Future Summit at the UN headquarters. According to his office, Zelensky is scheduled to attend the UN Security Council meeting on the Ukraine issue on Tuesday and is expected to speak at the UN General Assembly on Wednesday.
On the sidelines of the event, Zelenskyj plans to hold talks with international heads of state and government. A meeting with Chancellor Olaf Scholz is also planned.
Important trip for Zelenskyj
Aside from the major UN event, Zelensky is also using the trip to seek support from both parties in Washington ahead of the upcoming US presidential election. He will be received by President Biden, among others, in the White House.
The USA is the most important military supporter of Ukraine, which has been fending off a Russian war of aggression for two and a half years. While Kiev can be relatively sure of continued support from Washington if the Democrats win, the foreign policy course of Republican presidential candidate Trump with regard to Ukraine is unclear. During the election campaign, he stated several times that he wanted to achieve a quick peace, but did not say how or under what conditions.
Situation in Ukraine difficult
While Zelenskyj is looking for further help abroad, the situation at home remains difficult. There were further Russian attacks on Ukraine during the night. In Ternopol, the power went out in parts of the city during the night. Media previously reported an explosion at a substation. However, according to official information, there were no injuries.
The governor of the southern Ukrainian region of Zaporizhia, Ivan Fedorov, also reported explosions. The air defense had previously warned of the dropping of Russian glide bombs. There were no further details about the consequences. The hinterland of Ukraine is also repeatedly attacked by drones, rockets and guided bombs.
Meanwhile, fighting at the front continues with unprecedented intensity. According to the General Staff in Kiev, there were well over 100 clashes between Russian and Ukrainian troops during the course of the day. The Russian military once again carried out the most intensive attacks between the towns of Pokrovsk and Kurakhove in the eastern Ukrainian region of Donetsk, according to the evening situation report.
