The US wants to strengthen its troops in the Middle East. “A small number” of additional soldiers are to be sent.
In view of the tense situation in the Middle East, the USA is sending “a small number” of additional soldiers to the region. The Pentagon did not provide any further details on the number or where the soldiers would be sent. “In view of the increasing tensions in the Middle East and out of caution, we are sending a small number of additional US soldiers to reinforce our forces that are already in the region,” Pentagon spokesman Pat Ryder confirmed the reports to the German Press Agency in Washington when asked. For reasons of “operational security” he would not comment further.
There are currently around 40,000 US soldiers stationed in the region. After heavy mutual shelling at the weekend, Israel is continuing to take action against Hezbollah in Lebanon. The USA is Israel’s most important ally. It recently deployed additional warships, aircraft and a nuclear submarine equipped with missiles to the region. An aircraft carrier and its associated force are also still in the Red Sea.
