After the Brandenburg state election, there will most likely be a meeting between SPD Prime Minister Dietmar Woidke and BSW party founder Sahra Wagenknecht. The SPD has announced this. Wagenknecht was open to it. The SPD head of government is optimistic about the planned exploratory talks with the CDU and the Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW) alliance. The CDU has already made it clear, however, that it does not want to take part in a three-party alliance.
He is “very confident,” Woidke told the German Press Agency before the talks. The meeting with the CDU is planned for Thursday, the one with the BSW is planned for Friday at the earliest, but according to the BSW it will probably not take place until the middle of next week. After Sunday’s state election, Woidke’s SPD and the BSW would have a mathematical majority of seats in the Brandenburg state parliament even without the CDU.
The SPD politician will probably meet with Wagenknecht: Wagenknecht also met with Saxony’s Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer (CDU), said Brandenburg’s SPD General Secretary David Kolesnyk, referring to a conversation after the election there. “She will probably also meet with Mr. Woidke.”
Wagenknecht waits for Woidke
Wagenknecht told the dpa that she assumed that Woidke would get in touch if he wanted to talk to the BSW. A date has not yet been announced. In the case of Thuringia and Saxony, where the BSW is also being discussed as a coalition partner after the election, she insisted on holding personal contact talks.
SPD parliamentary group leader Daniel Keller said that the expectation was that the Brandenburg BSW heads would lead the exploratory talks, as they would later be responsible. Keller was confirmed as parliamentary group leader with 30 votes in favor and one abstention.
It is unclear whether both parties can or want to govern together. Brandenburg’s BSW top candidate Robert Crumbach did not want to commit himself before party talks on Wednesday. The SPD state executive committee had decided to start exploratory talks with the CDU and BSW.
CDU does not want to govern with SPD and BSW
The Brandenburg CDU rejects a joint coalition with the SPD and the BSW. “It is unthinkable for us,” said CDU parliamentary group leader Jan Redmann when asked about a possible coalition government. “The CDU is not available as a fifth wheel on the wagon.” Redmann announced: “We are preparing for the role in the opposition.”
The SPD won the state election on Sunday with 30.9 percent, just ahead of the AfD with 29.2 percent. The BSW came in at 13.5 percent. The CDU sank to 12.1 percent. The SPD and BSW together have 46 of 88 seats in the state parliament, the majority is 45. The SPD, CDU and Greens have been governing together since 2019. The Greens missed out on re-entering the state parliament, and the SPD and CDU do not have a majority in parliament together.
Redmann, who was re-elected as CDU parliamentary group leader with 11 out of 11 votes – one MP was ill – does not believe that participation in a possible coalition between the SPD and BSW is necessary: ”The CDU would not be required in such an alliance,” he said. In such a constellation, it would be “impossible” to implement CDU content. A minority government is not an option for the CDU.
