In the SPD, Chancellor Olaf Scholz is also considered the leading candidate in the next federal election. However, according to a survey, many German citizens are not convinced by this.
According to a survey, around two thirds of German citizens (67 percent) are in favor of Chancellor Olaf Scholz not running for chancellor again in the next federal election in favor of Defense Minister Boris Pistorius (both SPD). According to the representative survey by the opinion research institute Forsa for the RTL/ntv “Trendbarometer,” only 21 percent believe that Scholz should run for chancellor again.
In the eastern German states, 62 percent said that Scholz should not run again. In western Germany, the figure was 68 percent. Of the SPD voters surveyed in the previous federal election, 63 percent said that Scholz should not run again.
Following the nomination of CDU leader Friedrich Merz as the CDU and CSU’s candidate for chancellor, four percent of voters from other parties now want to vote for the Union. According to Forsa, this could increase the Union’s share of the vote from the current 32 to a maximum of 35 percent.
For the survey, 1,001 people in Germany were questioned on September 20 and 23. Forsa stated that the margin of error was +/- three percentage points. Election polls are generally subject to uncertainty. They only reflect the opinion at the time of the survey. They are not predictions of the election outcome.
