Nickel, which is used for batteries, is mined and processed on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi. The consequences for the people there are dramatic.
Sabit, 66, who has no surname in keeping with his homeland’s tradition, was alone at home in his small house in eastern Indonesia’s Java island when the government first took control of his fate.
A uniformed officer paid him an unannounced visit. It was already late that December afternoon, 33 years ago. “The man said I would be given a house and two hectares of land if I moved away from here,” says Sabit. “I felt chosen by God at that moment. I had always longed for a piece of land.”
