The Green Party leadership is withdrawing – preparation for an election campaign by Economics Minister Habeck as candidate for Chancellor? In any case, he is assured of the support of the Foreign Minister.
Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has spoken out in favor of Federal Minister of Economics Robert Habeck as the Green Party’s candidate for chancellor in the 2025 federal election. When asked whether Habeck was the right person for the role, the Green Party politician said on the ARD program “Maischberger”: “Definitely.” It’s about trust and reliability.
As Minister of Economic Affairs, Habeck made it clear “in one of the most difficult times” that he was able to lead the country in the crisis. With regard to the controversial heating law and the dependence on Russian energy after the start of the war in Ukraine, Baerbock said that Habeck had ensured “that we got through that winter well”.
Baerbock herself ran as a candidate for chancellor in the 2021 federal election; the Greens received 14.8 percent of the vote and entered the federal government. She has ruled out running again for the 2025 federal election.
Regarding the withdrawal of the Green Party leadership, Baerbock said that this was the decision of party leaders Ricarda Lang and Omid Nouripour, for whom she had the greatest respect. She had only learned of it that morning in New York.
The Greens had obviously not managed to have in-depth discussions with people during the election campaign, said Baerbock, citing support for Ukraine as an example. The party had reflected on this together and wanted to reposition itself for the federal election campaign. Before the next party conference, the team will now address strategic and substantive issues together, “with great support from Robert Habeck”.
