Investigations in US metropolis: New York mayor faces charges

According to US media reports, New York City Mayor Eric Adams is facing charges. The former police officer is facing false accusations.

According to US media, New York Mayor Eric Adams is facing charges. The Democratic politician confirmed the fact himself in a video message on Wednesday (local time): “I currently believe that the government intends to charge me with federal crimes.” Without specifying what charges might be brought against him, the 64-year-old described the possible accusations as “completely false and based on lies.”

The New York Times was the first to report that an indictment had been filed against the 64-year-old. It was still under seal and Adams had not yet been officially served with it. Other US media also reported, citing sources familiar with the matter. According to this, charges could be filed as early as Thursday. It remained unclear what Adams was accused of.

An indictment would have historic character

The Democratic politician also denied any accusations in a statement to US media. “If I am charged, I am innocent and I will fight against it with every ounce of my strength and spirit.” He always knew that he himself could become a target if he stood up for the citizens of New York.

If federal crimes are actually charged against the incumbent mayor, it would be the first time in the city’s history, according to the New York Times. Adams, a former police officer, has been New York City’s mayor since January 2022.

A call for his resignation from within his own Democratic ranks promptly followed: “I cannot see how Mayor Adams can continue to govern New York City,” wrote Representative Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez on X. “For the good of the city, he should resign.”
