Ukraine aid: Biden invites to international summit in Germany

How can its allies better support Ukraine after more than two and a half years of war? This will be the topic of an international meeting in Germany in October.

US President Joe Biden is inviting high-ranking representatives of Ukraine to a meeting in Germany in October. At a summit of the Ukraine Contact Group, more than 50 supporting countries will discuss how they can support Ukraine “in its defense against Russian aggression,” Biden said in Washington on Thursday. The US President’s visit to Germany is planned for October 10-12.

Although the White House did not provide any information about the venue, it is expected to take place at the US air base in Ramstein. The format is also known as the Ramstein Group and is usually led by US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin. The US and Germany are Ukraine’s largest arms suppliers.

It is Biden’s first bilateral visit to Germany in his four-year term in office and the first visit by a US president to Berlin since Barack Obama visited then-Prime Minister Angela Merkel (CDU) in the Chancellery on his farewell tour in November 2016.

USA promises Ukraine billions in new aid

Biden had previously promised Kyiv an expansion of US support, including nearly eight billion dollars in military aid and new ammunition for long-range weapons. The package includes another Patriot air defense system, long-range glide bombs and drones.

Zelensky immediately thanked for the help. “We will use this support in the most efficient and transparent way possible,” the head of state promised on Telegram, mentioning the support of both Republicans and Democrats.

Biden is scheduled to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Washington this evening.
