Parliament: Outrage over the behavior of the AfD in the Thuringian state parliament

After a three-hour state parliament session in Thuringia and numerous interruptions, the mood has heated up – and there are clear words in the direction of the AfD.

After repeated interruptions and political squabbles, outrage is growing over the behavior of the AfD’s senior president Jürgen Treutler (AfD) in the Thuringian state parliament. “It is a catastrophe how the AfD is pushing democracy through the ring by the nose,” said BSW parliamentary group leader Katja Wolf in parliament in Erfurt. The CDU’s parliamentary manager, Andreas Bühl, said: “What you are doing here is a seizure of power.”

The SPD MP Cornelia Klisch spoke of a hindrance to Parliament, which could not be constituted as planned after the state elections four weeks ago due to the delaying tactics of the senior president. “We want to become parliament,” she told dpa. The senior president has no right to prevent that. Treutler had repeatedly ignored requests to determine whether the Thuringian parliament had a quorum.

Minister: Attack on democracy

Thuringia’s acting Interior Minister and SPD MP Georg Maier said: “The AfD is attacking our democracy from within.” His speech was political and aggressive.

The state parliament session was repeatedly interrupted for longer periods of time within three hours. It was about determining the quorum and interpreting the rules of procedure. It is uncertain whether a state parliament president will be elected. The AfD, as the strongest faction, insists on the right to make proposals.
