Meeting completed +++ Five interruptions +++ AfD paralyzes parliament +++ The star-Live blog for the first session of the Thuringian state parliament for reading.
It was supposed to be the constituent session of the Thuringian state parliament, including the election of the state parliament president – and ended in farce. After four hours and 12 minutes, only one item on the agenda had been dealt with: the opening of the meeting by AfD senior president Jürgen Treutler.
What followed was a theater that is not worthy of a German state parliament. MPs from the CDU, BSW, SPD and the Left submitted proposals to change the rules of procedure several times. The background was the upcoming election of the state parliament president. In the past, this was formally proposed by the largest parliamentary group and passed by Parliament.
Thuringia’s state parliament cannot constitute itself – AfD’s senior president paralyzes parliament
However, such a president of the AfD will not be accepted, according to MPs from the other parties. Therefore, they wanted to change the rules of procedure, according to which other political groups can also propose a candidate. But senior president Treutler did not even allow a vote on a change to these rules of procedure.
In the end there is a sad result: more than four hours of meeting, five longer and even shorter interruptions and only a single item on the agenda that could be checked off.
Because the parliamentary groups simply could not come to an agreement with Treutler, the state constitutional court in Weimar must now decide how the meeting should be continued. But one thing is certain: it is a black day for democracy in Thuringia.
