Robert Habeck: Decision from Karlsruhe on the incident in Schlüttsiel

In January, Robert Habeck was prevented from leaving a ferry by an angry crowd. Was this coercion by a constitutional body?

The incident happened in January at the height of farmers’ protests and shocked the republic. At the Schlüttsiel ferry pier in Schleswig-Holstein, Federal Economics Minister Robert Habeck (Greens) was prevented from getting off by an angry crowd.

Robert Habeck could not leave the ferry

Habeck, who was returning from a holiday from Hallig Hooge, remained on the ferry for safety reasons and was only able to return to the mainland hours later than planned. Various videos of the incident show angry people jostling at the ferry dock. Some tried to storm onto the ferry as it left again, and a police officer had to use pepper spray. But did the protesters also commit crimes?

There was, among other things, the suspicion that this could be a case of coercion of constitutional bodies. After all, Habeck is a member of the federal government as minister and vice-chancellor, although he travels privately.

In this case, the Federal Prosecutor General in Karlsruhe would have been responsible. But after months of review, he has now refused to take over the investigation. The Flensburg public prosecutor’s office told him this star upon request.

The events were submitted to the Federal Prosecutor General in Karlsruhe in order to check whether it could be such coercion, said the Flensburg senior public prosecutor Bernd Winterfeldt star: “The Federal Prosecutor General, however, denied the existence of any initial suspicion of such a crime and sent the files back for final examination by the Flensburg public prosecutor’s office.”

Flensburg public prosecutor’s office continues to investigate

The decision from Karlsruhe does not mean that the accusation of committing crimes has been completely eliminated. “The public prosecutor’s investigations in connection with the events at the ferry pier in Schlüttsiel/Nordfriesland district have not yet been completed,” said the spokesman for the public prosecutor’s office. Image, sound and video files as well as “further research results from the Internet are currently being viewed and evaluated”. A final assessment is currently pending.
