The race for the Union’s candidacy for chancellor is over. Now the newly elected candidate Friedrich Merz is making a combative appearance at the NRW CDU party conference.
Exactly one year before the next federal election, Union Chancellor candidate Friedrich Merz called on the CDU and CSU to fight together for victory. “We are now setting out for next year’s elections,” said the CDU federal chairman at the state party conference of the North Rhine-Westphalia CDU.
Merz particularly thanked the CSU and its party leader Markus Söder for supporting his nomination as candidate for chancellor. “We only have a chance of winning the federal election if the CDU and CSU take the path together.”
Merz’s appearance at the party conference of the largest CDU state association was his first major speech since his nomination. Merz appeared combative. “We are determined to stand as those who won the 2025 federal election shortly after 6 p.m. on September 28th.” The most important thing that the next federal government must do is first of all to treat each other sensibly, said Merz, with a view to the disputes in the current traffic light government. At the same time, Merz clearly differentiated himself from the AfD. “We will not associate with these people,” he emphasized.
