Traffic lights scare away Green youth – other state executives resign

While Habeck wants to orient the Green Party more towards the center, a number of young Greens are leaving the party. Now the third state executive board declares its resignation.

With the state association of the Green Youth in North Rhine-Westphalia, the third state executive board is now following the course of the federal executive board. The management staff in Bavaria and Lower Saxony have already resigned, in Bavaria the entire eight-member board of directors and in Lower Saxony the dual leadership.

On Saturday afternoon, board spokeswoman Vivianne Schwedersky for the North Rhine-Westphalia board of the Green Youth announced her resignation on Instagram: “We all came to the Green Youth because we want to fight for a fair world… but ultimately we come to the conclusion: The Green Party does not the left-wing politics that it actually needs,” writes Schwedersky. “Too often bad compromises are made instead of clearly standing up for social improvements.” There is a lack of a strong left-wing force in Germany “that finally puts the economy and the state at the service of the people.”

This largely corresponds to the argumentation of the Green Youth Federal Council, which resigned on Thursday. This shows that this is not a solo effort by a small group within the Green Youth. However, there are also other voices: The state spokeswoman for the Green Youth Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Henriette Held, stated that she shared the “content criticism of the Green Party’s policies”. However, the state executive board will not resign, but will “carry out the term of office as planned”.

The Green Party state chairwoman in North Rhine-Westphalia, Yazgülü Zeybek, said she regretted the decision, but was confident that things would continue with the Green Youth within the party. “The Green Youth remains our youth association and I am happy about all the committed members who are committed to green politics there.”

It’s no fun campaigning for the Greens

The resignations caused a particular stir because the federal executive board of the Greens also resigned on Wednesday after the poor performance in the most recent state elections. For many in the Green Youth, it is apparently difficult to support the latest concessions in asylum policy.

But when it comes to redistribution, climate protection and social security, the traffic light policy is also going in the wrong direction for many people. Meanwhile, the Greens in the federal government are currently showing more of an orientation towards the political center.

From the statements of the previous board spokeswoman Vivianne Schwedersky from the Green Youth NRW it is also clear that it is no fun to advertise for the Greens in the current social atmosphere. “We no longer want to stick our necks out for policies that we find wrong.” Schwerdersky and with her the entire Green Youth Board of North Rhine-Westphalia now want to support the left-wing initiative. She already has on Instagram.

In Rhineland-Palatinate, the board of the Green Youth has also just resigned, although it is unclear to what extent this is related to the other resignations. Around 16,000 young people are organized in the Green Youth, which was only founded in 1994. Membership usually expires on your 28th birthday.
