Lebanon: Bundeswehr flies out embassy personnel

The Bundeswehr has sent a plane to partially evacuate the German embassy in Beirut. They want to fly out “staff who are not urgently needed” and relatives.

A Bundeswehr Airbus is to fly Germans out of Lebanon in view of the conflict between Israel and the pro-Iranian Shiite militia Hezbollah. In view of the situation, the Foreign Office has once again raised the crisis level for the foreign missions in Beirut, Ramallah and Tel Aviv and initiated a diplomatic pickup, the Foreign Ministry announced on Monday.

Despite the Bundeswehr flight: German embassy in Lebanon should continue to work

This meant that the embassies remained operational. However, family members of the posted employees and of German intermediary organizations as well as personnel who are not urgently needed would be flown out.

An Air Force A321 aircraft flew to the Lebanese capital Beirut on Monday to support the departure, the ministry said. German citizens who are particularly at risk due to medical circumstances would also be taken on board the Bundeswehr machine.

Because of the aggravated situation in the Middle East, the federal government has been calling on Germans in Lebanon to leave the country since October last year. The embassy in the country is also supporting the Germans who remain there when they leave the country “via commercial flights and other means,” it said. According to a foreign ministry spokesman on Monday, there are currently around 1,800 Germans in Lebanon.
