Israel invaded Lebanon with ground troops on Tuesday night. Hezbollah is meanwhile announcing resistance.
The Israeli Air Force has attacked several weapons factories and infrastructure belonging to the Lebanese Hezbollah militia in a southern suburb of Beirut, according to the military. The attacks were carried out with the help of intelligence information, the army said in a statement. Steps had been taken to reduce possible harm to civilians. There were initially no reports of casualties in the attacks, which took place late on Monday evening.
Eyewitnesses reported massive damage in the affected residential area of Haret Hreik. Several buildings were razed to the ground. Streets were buried under rubble. In the morning there was clean-up work to clear the streets.
Israeli ground troops advanced into southern Lebanon during the night. The first ground offensive since the last Lebanon war in 2006 has been codenamed “Arrows of the North”. The Israeli army spoke of “limited” attacks on targets near the border and called them an immediate threat to communities in northern Israel. Israel’s goal is to push Hezbollah out of the border area in order to enable around 60,000 citizens to return to their residential areas near the border.
