War in Ukraine: Six dead in Kherson in Russian shelling

Russia repeatedly attacks civilian targets in Ukraine. In the morning the artillery shelled a town on the Dnipro. The bullets landed near a busy market.

According to official information, at least six people died in the southern Ukrainian city of Kherson this morning due to Russian shelling. Six other civilians were injured. “Another barbaric Russian strike against Kherson, against ordinary people at a bus stop,” said Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sibyha, commenting on the attack on the X platform, where he also published the images of corpses. He called for further military support from the West to stop Russia.

The city center came under artillery fire around 9 a.m. local time (8 a.m. CEST), the area’s public prosecutor’s office said. There were impacts around a market and at a public transport stop. The public prosecutor’s office initially reported seven deaths, but this number was later corrected.

Kherson is the capital of the region of the same name in southern Ukraine and is located on the Dnipro. Russian troops captured Kherson shortly after the start of the war of aggression ordered by Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin. However, they had to retreat behind the Dnipro in autumn 2022 after a Ukrainian counter-offensive. Since then, the city has been controlled by Ukraine again. Nevertheless, Putin declared Kherson, as well as the Donetsk, Luhansk and Zaporizhzhia regions, to be Russian territory.

Because of its close proximity to the front, the city is often shelled by the Russian military. There are always civilian casualties.
