Hamas terror in Israel: As stern reporters have been reporting since October 7th

The war has been raging in the Middle East for a year. How do you report on the unimaginable – and what inner conflict can our reporters still not resolve to this day?

Already 48 hours after the Hamas terrorist attack on Israel star-Reporter Katharina Kunert on one of the few aircraft seats still available to the Middle East. Because all routes to Tel Aviv were either canceled or fully booked, she entered the country via Aqaba, Jordan.

Colleague Fabian Huber followed her a few days later – he also took a detour. His plane circled over the Mediterranean for half an hour before landing in Israel because the air alarm was blaring on the ground below.

Since then they have both been traveling for the star repeatedly into the conflict zone, reporting from the kibbutzim within sight of Gaza, from Israel’s second front on the northern border with Lebanon, from the demonstrating hostage families in Tel Aviv and the upheavals in Israeli politics.

Being constantly confronted with all the suffering and sadness doesn’t go unnoticed by the two reporters. “When you work, you obviously wear different glasses than when you’re a private person. But I saw images that still haunt me to this day,” says Kunert, referring primarily to the blood-soaked crime scenes of October 7th.

What Huber remembers most is the Shabbat meal with a Tel Aviv family. The father of the family told him about his son, who was suddenly afraid of his Arab friends. “It really hit me emotionally,” says Huber. “To feel how this conflict is transferred to the brain of a twelve-year-old boy.”

The two would also like to report from Gaza. But Israel continues to close off the coastal strip to international media. “You get the impression that you’re not doing justice to this war. You’re already struggling with remorse,” says Huber. The only way out is the shaky cell phone connection to civilians and helpers in the war zone. Or traveling to the West Bank. Kunert also noted there: “The hatred is increasing extremely.”
