The US and Israel are struggling to find the right answer after Iran’s missile attack. However, the Pentagon remains tight-lipped about the targets of possible retaliation strikes.
The US government continues to talk to Israel about how to respond to the Iranian missile attack. “We are discussing with them what a response to Iran could look like. But I don’t think it makes sense or really helpful to explain details here about what possible targets could look like,” said Pentagon spokeswoman Sabrina Singh when asked whether Iranian oil facilities are a possible target.
US President Joe Biden had previously said that the US was discussing its stance on a possible Israeli attack on Iranian oil facilities. The statement promptly caused uncertainty on the markets.
Singh was asked several times in the press conference about US-Israel relations. “We are not informed about every single operation they carry out every day,” said Singh, referring to Israel. The USA was surprised by the killing of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah. But US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin would speak regularly with his Israeli counterpart Joav Galant. “We will be part of these discussions in any response from Israel to Iran.”
