Health: WHO: A year of collective trauma for Israel

The year since the terrorist attacks on October 7, 2023 has left deep scars in Israel. The WHO is on site and is helping.

Since the devastating terrorist attacks on Israel from the Gaza Strip on October 7, 2023, a health crisis has also spread in Israel. “This Monday marks the anniversary of a collective trauma that spared no one in the country,” said the World Health Organization (WHO) representative in Israel, Michel Thieren. Twice or sometimes three times as many people as before needed psychiatric support.

The background is the attacks that left around 1,200 dead, the abduction of around 200 hostages to the Gaza Strip and around 19,000 rockets that have since been fired at Israel. This displaced 75,000 people who have not yet been able to return to their homes.

According to Thieren, the entire health system in the north of the country only functions in basements, shelters or parking garages. “A patient without daylight is a patient without natural power to get well,” said Thieren.

“No one will heal without peace,” said Thieren. “And none will heal without the return of the 101 hostages still in the hands of Hamas.”
