Anniversary October 7th: Faeser calls for tough action against anti-Semitism

Rallies are planned this weekend to mark the anniversary of the October 7 massacre. Emotions will run high and the police will face a difficult task.

Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) has announced tough action in the event of anti-Semitic statements on the anniversary of the Hamas massacre on October 7, 2023. In view of the subsequent escalation of violence in the Middle East, there is a need for space for mourning, and of course peaceful protest is part of democracy, Faeser told the “Tagesspiegel”.

“At the same time, if we again experience disgusting hatred of Jews, calls for the destruction of Israel, Islamist terrorist propaganda or attacks on emergency services, then the police must intervene quickly and harshly,” warned the minister. The police forces would have their full support for this.

Even before the anniversary on October 7th, people want to commemorate the Hamas massacre in Israel and the Gaza war with rallies and demonstrations. Numerous events have been announced for the weekend in Berlin and elsewhere. The police are preparing for a major operation.

The police union expects a “city-wide, dynamic situation” in the capital. The Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution warned of an increase in anti-Israel and anti-Semitic protests.

A year ago on October 7, 2023, terrorists from Hamas and other extremist groups killed more than 1,200 people in Israel and kidnapped around 250 others as hostages in the Gaza Strip. This was the trigger for the Gaza war, in which, according to the Hamas-controlled health authority, around 42,000 Palestinians have been killed so far, around a third of them children and young people.
