Middle East crisis: UN: More than half a million people displaced in Lebanon

The Israeli military repeatedly warns the Lebanese of attacks. Hundreds of thousands of people are leaving their homes in panic. Some make it abroad.

According to the UN, the humanitarian crisis in Lebanon is getting worse. More than half a million people are now on the run in the Mediterranean country and 285,000 have left the country, reported the UN emergency relief office OCHA.

The number of conflict-related deaths has increased by 200 percent in the past two weeks, and that of displaced people by 385 percent.

Since September 23, Israel has massively increased its rocket attacks on Hezbollah militia targets in Lebanon. Hezbollah has been attacking Israel since October 8, 2023 – according to its own statements in solidarity with the Islamist Hamas in the Gaza Strip, against which Israel has been waging war for almost a year.

Almost 1,700 dead

As of October 3, at least 1,699 people had died violently in one year as a result of the conflict between Israel and the pro-Inran Hezbollah militia, OCHA reported, citing the Lebanese Ministry of Health. Almost 10,000 people were injured. 77 health care workers died, 28 of them within 24 hours on the 2nd/3rd. October.

According to the UN Organization for Migration (IOM), as of October 3, more than half a million people (541,527) were on the run in the country.

Tens of thousands of Lebanese also fled abroad

According to IOM information, almost 285,000 people have left the country since September 23rd, a good 40 percent of them Lebanese. Almost 40,000 Lebanese were flown out, as were 10,000 Syrians. The majority of people flee across the borders by land, especially to Syria.

According to OCHA, the UN refugee agency UNHCR registered 185,000 arrivals in Syria. At least 4,000 Lebanese have also reportedly fled to Iraq.
