The UN Emergency Relief Office (OCHA) condemns the terrorist attacks on Israel. It makes serious allegations against Israel in connection with the subsequent military strikes.
A year after the terrorist attacks on Israel, the UN Emergency Relief Office (OCHA) has described the past 12 months in the Middle East as a “relentless tragedy”. “No statistics or words can fully convey the extent of the physical, psychological and societal devastation that has taken place,” said Joyce Msuya, the acting UN emergency relief coordinator.
OCHA condemned the attacks on Israel by Hamas and other terrorist groups on October 7, 2023, which killed approximately 1,200 people and injured nearly 5,500. It condemned the deportation of more than 200 people to the Gaza Strip. Among other things, they were exposed to sexual violence there.
10,000 more dead under rubble
The subsequent Israeli military strikes in the Gaza Strip triggered a catastrophe, it said. According to the Hamas authorities, more than 41,000 people were killed and almost 100,000 were injured, some seriously. The World Health Organization (WHO) speaks of an estimated 10,000 more deaths under the rubble.
Hospitals systematically attacked
“Schools housing displaced families have been repeatedly shelled, health care workers and hospitals have been systematically attacked, and aid convoys have been repeatedly blocked and even shot at,” criticized OCHA. People lived with extreme deprivation, without sufficient food or medical care.
Israel’s military accuses the Islamist organization Hamas of using houses, clinics, mosques as well as school buildings and universities in the Gaza Strip for its terrorist purposes and of abusing local residents as living shields.
OCHA called on other countries to use their influence to ensure compliance with international humanitarian law requiring the protection of civilians.
