Gaza Strip attacks Israel with rockets – air alert over Tel Aviv

The sirens are screaming in Tel Aviv and Israel is trying to defend itself. In Germany, protests on the anniversary of the Hamas massacre are keeping the police on their toes.

On the anniversary of Hamas’ major attack on Israel, rocket attacks from the Gaza Strip triggered air alarms in the Tel Aviv area. Sirens sounded in the center of the country because of “projectiles fired from the Gaza Strip,” the army said on Monday morning. Hamas confirmed the rocket volley on Tel Aviv.

The radical Islamic Palestinian organization Hamas said it had already fired rockets at the south of Israel from the Gaza Strip that morning – just a few minutes after the start of Israeli commemorations for the victims of the unprecedented Hamas attack a year ago. At that time, hundreds of fighters from Hamas and allied Islamist Palestinian groups broke through the border fence between the Gaza Strip and Israel. According to Israeli figures, a total of 1,205 people, mostly civilians, were killed in several southern Israeli towns, at the Nova music festival and as hostages in the Gaza Strip.

Of the 251 hostages abducted by Hamas, 97 are currently still being held in the Gaza Strip; according to the Israeli army, 37 of them are dead. Israel has been taking massive military action in the Gaza Strip since the Hamas attack a year ago. According to the Hamas health authority, which cannot be independently verified, more than 41,800 people were killed.

Israel attacks Lebanon

Israel is also increasingly targeting Hamas allies, including the militia Hezbollah. Israel has disrupted the country’s telecommunications services with attacks on several parts of Lebanon. Networks in the capital Beirut and in the areas around Tyre, Sidon and Nabatijeh were among those affected, said the organization NetBlocks, which is best known for monitoring Internet blocks. There were losses of internet connections in these regional networks. Because many residents are fleeing attacks, internet usage is also declining.

Lebanon’s communication network infrastructure was already considered weak before the current conflict. Due to the ongoing financial and economic crisis, there is a lack of investment and access to the Internet is expensive compared to other countries in the region. In the Lebanese Hezbollah conflict with Israel, there are also fears that Israel could disrupt the undersea cables to Lebanon, through which – along with satellites – a large part of the Internet traffic runs.

Several incidents during demonstrations in Germany

In view of the anniversary of the Hamas massacre in Israel, demonstrations are taking place in Germany, among other places. More than 2,000 police officers are deployed nationwide. According to authorities, 42 criminal proceedings have been initiated in the capital since Saturday. An Israeli tourist and her father were attacked at a gathering, police said on Sunday evening. The woman shouted something pro-Israel towards the demonstrators. The two were then attacked with punches and kicks and were slightly injured.

Police arrested four suspects in this connection. A total of up to 1,800 people took part in the pro-Palestinian demonstration, the police said. Several of them were reportedly recognized as criminals and arrested. At the demonstration, forbidden slogans were chanted and forbidden flags were brought along.

According to information, around 600 people took part in a pro-Israel demonstration. Around 40 pro-Palestinian demonstrators initially mingled with them unnoticed. There was a dispute and a Palestinian flag was snatched from a man. The police pushed the 40 people out of the demonstration.

According to the police, criminal investigations were initiated against the man who snatched the flag and against 26 pro-Palestinian demonstrators, as well as against a man who is said to have filmed individual police officers and streamed them live. A man who was recognized as a criminal was arrested.

Another man threw a smoke grenade, a so-called smoke pot, in the direction of the emergency services during the demonstration and resisted when he was later arrested. A woman was also arrested for allegedly daubing a traffic sign with anti-Israel lettering.

Ahead of the anniversary of the Hamas attack on Israel this Monday, commemorative events and rallies took place in many regions of the world over the weekend. Demonstrations were also planned for Monday.
