Part of Ukraine occupied by Russia, but the other part in NATO? If there are such proposals in Berlin, neither Kiev nor Moscow will agree to them.
The Kremlin sees no basis for the West’s alleged plans to end the war in Ukraine through a temporary partition. There are currently many publications and considerations on this topic, “but so far none of these considerations have any real basis,” said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov in Moscow.
He spoke of a “German scenario” because, according to media reports, Berlin is supposedly thinking in this direction. The Italian newspaper “La Repubblica” reported this in September. Accordingly, if the fighting ends, Russia would temporarily occupy part of Ukraine, while the rest of Ukraine would become a NATO member or receive similarly strong security guarantees. The federal government has not commented on this.
Zelensky: Peace “without trade with territories”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky rejected such a solution. Ukraine demands the return of all occupied territories. His country needs peace “without any trade in sovereignty or trade in territories,” said Zelensky. For Russia, in turn, one goal of its war of aggression is to prevent Ukraine from joining NATO.
Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) recently emphasized that the possibilities for peace must be explored. There were also reports of an allegedly planned phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin. However, the Kremlin decided that there were no topics for such a conversation. More clarity about the West’s Ukraine strategy is expected from US President Joe Biden’s visit to Germany next weekend.
