Russian President Vladimir Putin supported the idea of conferring the honorary title “City of Labor Valor” on the city of Astrakhan. The head of state announced this on Monday, January 17, during a meeting with the regional governor Igor Babushkin.
“We have collected all archival documents, received the conclusion of the Russian Academy of Sciences and, Vladimir Vladimirovich, we ask you to support our initiative and confer an honorary title on the city of Astrakhan,” the governor addressed Putin.
Babushkin said that during the Great Patriotic War in September 1942, the 28th Army stopped the Nazis on the left flank of the Stalingrad Front. His headquarters, as well as 80 hospitals, were located at that time in Astrakhan.
“Astrakhan, Astrakhan, of course, made a significant contribution to the victory over Nazism. Deserve for sure, I will support,” the President said.
The city administration announced back in October last year that it was preparing a package of documents for entering the State Duma with the initiative to award Astrakhan the honorary title of the Russian Federation “City of Labor Valor”.
This honorary title of the Russian Federation was established in order to perpetuate the feat of home front workers during the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945. It is awarded to cities whose inhabitants have made a significant contribution to achieving victory in the war. As reported on the website of the City of Labor Valor, today 44 cities in the country bear this title.
On September 10 last year, Putin signed a decree conferring the title “City of Labor Valor” on 12 cities. The title was given to Okha (Sakhalin Region), Stupino (Moscow Region), Kostroma, Lysva (Perm Territory), Syzran (Samara Region), Monchegorsk (Murmansk Region), Vorkuta (Komi Republic), Aldan (Yakutia), Bologoe (Tver Region), Chita, Dzerzhinsk (Nizhny Novgorod region) and Kemerovo.
