Robert Habeck – the Germans find him nice but not very competent

Robert Habeck is warming up as the Green Party’s candidate for chancellor. But his image has suffered badly. Only his own supporters – and those of another party – give him good marks.

Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck is expected to be chosen as candidate for chancellor at the Green Party conference in mid-November. But the economics minister has clearly lost his appeal among Germans. This shows the property profile that Forsa has for the star collected at irregular intervals for top politicians. The Green politician only continues to achieve absolute majorities when it comes to two rather soft factors: 52 percent each find Habeck likeable or say that he speaks understandably. Although the Vice Chancellor is said to have just replaced the Green party leaders, only 25 percent of Germans consider him to be a strong leader – that is ten percentage points less than a year and a half ago.

Robert Habeck loses significantly compared to the previous year

The Economics Minister also loses significantly when it comes to the important criterion of competence. The controversial heating law is probably having an impact here. Only 36 percent consider Habeck to be competent – eight percentage points less than a year ago. The losses are similarly great for the trait “knows what moves people”. Only 28 percent say that about the politician (a minus of nine percentage points)

The supporters of the AfD and the Sarah Wagenknecht alliance are particularly critical of Habeck. However, the Vice Chancellor continues to be well received by the remaining Green Party supporters. 80 percent of them think he is competent and 83 percent think he is likeable. It is striking that Habeck also performs well above average among SPD voters. They find him 80 percent likeable and 59 percent competent. So it’s quite possible that the deputy can at least steal a few votes from his unpopular boss Olaf Scholz.

The data was compiled by the market and opinion research institute forsa star and RTL Deutschland collected by telephone between October 2nd and 4th, 2024. The survey is therefore representative. Database: 1008 surveys. Statistical margin of error: +/- 3 percentage points. The comparison values come from a survey of the same name from March 2023
